The Alocasia is native to the tropics of Asia, mainly India. The Alocasia belongs to the Araceae family. The plant has several nicknames such as Taro, Giant Taro or Elephant's Ear. The plant owes these nicknames to its leaves. In the tropical rain forests of Asia, these Alocasia plants are used as a natural umbrella for shelter. In fact, the leaves can grow up to one and a half metres in diameter and thus provide good shelter. Unfortunately, it is not the easiest houseplant and therefore needs careful handling.
